John 14:27

«Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.»

Jesus promises a lasting, inward peace that steadies the heart beyond what the world can offer.

Understand the verse

What this verse is about

In John 14:27 Jesus offers his peace as a gift distinct from temporary, external calm—it is rooted in his presence and in trusting him. This peace quiets worry and fear by reorienting our hearts toward God’s authority and care, not circumstances. It invites believers to rest in a relationship rather than in solutions.

Context

This promise comes during Jesus’ farewell discourse to his disciples as he prepares them for his departure and the coming Spirit (John 13–17). He comforts them against impending confusion and persecution, teaching that his ongoing presence will sustain them when he is physically gone.

When people especially turn to it

People often turn to this verse in seasons of anxiety, grief, or major life transitions when reassurance of Christ’s steady presence is needed. It’s also used before difficult conversations or decisions to seek inner calm.

A short prayer

Lord, help me receive the peace you give so my heart is not troubled or afraid; steady my thoughts on you and help me live with confidence in your presence.
