Psalm 23:4

«Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.»

Even in dark valleys, God’s companionship does not disappear

Understand the verse

What this verse is about

The power of this verse is that it does not deny the valley. The psalmist names danger honestly, yet he refuses to give fear the final word. God’s rod and staff are signs of guidance and rescue, not cruelty.

Context

Psalm 23 moves from green pastures to the valley and then to a table in the presence of enemies. Verse 4 belongs to that whole journey of trust. David speaks of a God who stays near not only in rest, but also in danger.

When people especially turn to it

When health, loss, uncertainty, or vulnerability make fear feel especially close.

A short prayer

Lord, I walk through fear. Stay with me as you promised; steady my heart.
